Welcome to the Mattiverse

12 months of blogging

Mattiverse

It doesn't seem like 6 months ago when I posted 6 months of bear blog and yet here we are.

This also happens to be my 100th post, exciting right?

Not only did I manage to post at least once for the last 12 months, but I posted for 33 days straight from the start of May to the start of June. Since then, I've been posting every other day. I've given myself a goal to never miss more than one day unless I'm on holiday (which I will be in a few weeks).

That said, I've enjoyed my time on Bear. I have received some fantastic emails about my posts and have read more articles than I can count.

Looking back at that 6 month post, there was a quote that stands out to me:

"There's no niche, no problems that I'm solving, no advice, inspiration or entertainment for others. It's all for me."

Despite that, I've only started living up to this over the last couple of months, when I was no longer concerned about writing to provide 'value' for anyone.

I still have ambitions in the back of my mind of being able to make a living from writing online, but I've also come to terms with the fact that I am simply enjoying writing without any pressure or having to consider topics, themes or 'niches'.

This has brought a sense of freedom that I was missing and while perhaps my analytics and engagement have taken a downturn, I've been feeling better than ever about my online presence.

Knowing I have the freedom to have a thought and then write about said thought without worry is powerful and I believe that everyone has something worth sharing, even if it's only for themselves.

So, my advice for anyone getting started?

Don't worry about nobody reading, or commenting, liking or any of those engagement metrics that we're supposed to assume gives 'value' to our writing. Aim for freedom and aim for it consistently1 and I promise you'll find yourself enjoying your writing.

Here's to the next 12 months.

  1. Consistently is down to the individual - whatever keeps you writing over the long term works, whether that's every day or once a month.
