Welcome to the Mattiverse

a path to freedom

I always thought of myself as creative because I was drawn to art and design1.

I was fortunate enough to get a job within the design industry, creating classified advertising for an events and publishing business within the agriculture industry. Nine years later and I've worked my way up to being the head of department and I realise how far I've been heading up the wrong path. I used to be repulsed by subjects such as Maths, English and Science because they seemed to be 'boring' and 'traditional'.

The promotion brought with it the managing of budgets, looking more into data and thinking about business decisions and I've found myself enjoying it. I find myself enjoying that side of things a lot more than I've ever enjoyed 'creating'.

I have my art page and I like the work I've put on there, but a lot of times I find myself frustrated with the production of art, I don't find solace in creating art or design, it's an obligation not a privilege and it's only now I'm realising the difference.

I like to speak about freedom and for a long time, I thought my way to freedom would be through the creative industry and (wrongly) assuming that was my only avenue to being creative, the truth is that I have found more creative stirrings in looking at data and numbers than I ever had trying to put together a piece of art2.

I've started brushing up on my Math skills, I've used AI to help build a bit of a learning plan so I can start going down the data analytics (or business analytics) route. I have no idea where this actually leads me, but for the first time, I'm not fussed. I don't mind not knowing. I'm not worried that I need to make money from this or that I need to be aiming for a new career and yes, that may be where this ends up but that's a problem for the future.

I'm tired of worrying about the future and forgetting the benefits of the now, I want to enjoy my days rather than feeling miserable and yes, my career currently is a big part of my misery for one reason or another, but I have faith. I have faith that things will fall back into place with a bit of work.

I know that my writing will be important to this, I know that these skills I'm wanting to develop because I enjoy them will be important. Yes, I'm sure some of you may look at data and say AI will take it over and that may be true, but I don't care. I don't care because I am finally heading down the right path for my own freedom.

And I intend to enjoy the journey.

  1. Unintentional pun, I promise.

  2. This is still ridiculous to me as it took me two attempts to pass my Maths GCSE (so many years ago).
