Welcome to the Mattiverse

call to arts

I always remember being pretty good at drawing, I drew a picture of Taz (from Loony Tunes) and I remember feeling so proud. Despite not knowing it at the time, that was my first brush (pun somewhat intended) with art and the importance of creativity.

Rather than letting that fuel me to continue, I fell victim to the comparison trap and stopped drawing. From that fear, I chose to go down the Graphic Design route, thinking it was a similar thing but with less drawing (and less chance of being laughed at for my ditto-looking faces...)

The topic of taking creativity 'seriously' almost feels taboo. Sure, art and other creative pursuits are a nice little hobby, but that's all they'll ever really be, after all:

These are a few of the points that I struggle with when it comes to my own creative endeavours. This is even after I've made a living as a Graphic Designer, which I ended up angling away from to progress...

The truth is that I can tell you about how important art is to being human and how it's necessary for us to create. But, that's going to mean very little to you when you simple can't believe it. Essentially, my call to you is a hollow echo that you can walk1 away from.

For me, I want need to be creative2. I want to make money from it. I want to be able to gain attention from my creativity, to inspire, educate and entertain people with it. The thought of making people weep with words, find courage from music or get inspired by a piece of art. That's my call to arts.

Deep down, that need is within all of us. It might be under 100 tons of guilt or fear, but it will be there.

I urge you to find it. Breathe life into it. Nurture it.

Find your call to arts, and let it fire you up until you have no choice but to let it explode out of you.

  1. Or run screaming...

  2. You can see my art here and you're reading the words now. (although the rest of the blog is here)
