one thing I've learned today
I've been reading 'The Drunkard's Walk' and it's been such an interesting read, I've always had an interest in randomness and so this was a standout for me.
One of the things that the book mentions is that the probability of two events both occurring will never be greater than the probability of each event occurring individually.
The best way I thought about this was as a Venn diagram, in which event A is circle one and event B is circle two, the middle overlap becomes both events happening together.
What was interesting to me about this was that even though this will always be the case, we can actually 'fool' people into believing this not to be the case by adding more details to a scene1. Apparently this makes something more 'real' and therefore more believable to happen.
Perhaps it's why good stories are always the method in which we're sold things, because they're more believable as valuable?
Perhaps that's a reach on my part...
