phoning it in
My mum used to tell me to work at things and make sure I wasn't 'playing at it', essentially it was her way of saying don't 'phone it in'.
This got me thinking about my blog and the posts I've been creating and whether they could class as 'phoning it in' and for some people, they probably think I am. Low energy, low effort and low value posts about... Well essentially about nothing.
But the more I thought, the more I focused on what 'phoning it in' really means, which is to do something with low effort or enthusiasm and the truth is that I don't mean either of those criteria. No matter what others think, I still have the same enthusiasm to share that I did yesterday and a week ago and even 11 months ago when I was first starting out.
My response to posting 'value'?
Fuck value.
I'm no longer feeling the need to be transactional in my creativity and that means that I'll post about random nonsense, or even things that don't have any specific meaning at all.
You know why? Because I can.
Will that turn some people off? Make them mad? Probably, but the truth is that I'm having more fun talking shit than trying to post something that a viewer will find 'valuable' for all of 10-15 minutes before they stumble onto the next post.
So if you ever feel like you're phoning it in, remember that if you have any enthusiasm or are willing to put any effort into what you're doing, you'll know in your heart that you can't be.
And fuck anyone else who makes you think otherwise.
