Welcome to the Mattiverse

the hardest part is showing up

I've spoken previously about my belief that creativity needs courage, I stand by that point.

I had a gym trainer who always used to say the hardest part was getting there and it's the same point. It takes courage to get yourself to the gym, especially if you're like me and you're incredibly conscious of people watching, staring or judging you 1.

But the concept is the same, the most difficult thing, whether it's sharing a piece of art, your writing or getting yourself to the gym. The courage is in showing up and not letting fear rule you.

The thing is that it's never easy, but the result is more than worth it.

For me, whether it's with the gym or with publishing my writing, I feel a sense of accomplishment. More than that, I've started being able to push back on the hold that fear has had on me and start to understand that it's a small part of me that (when it comes to these two activities) doesn't help me.

There's such a high bar placed on us when it comes to sharing our creative works. We need to make sure we optimise it for our audience, provide a 'CTA' and make sure the 'value' is worthwhile for whoever is reading it 2.

It's a shame we can't bottle up courage and share it with each other when we need it, but unfortunately, that will never be the case, so all I can do is to continue urging anyone who's doing anything that requires courage to not let fear get the best of you, to fight against it and to reap the rewards that come from that.

Each of us has something worth being courageous for, please, please, please, never forget that and never let fear make you believe otherwise.

  1. Believe me when I say, nobody is doing.

  2. Not to mention how important is it that you've already picked a niche and done the research to make sure it's worth posting in.
